Breaking Down the Buzz Over Brow Lamination

Since the 1990s, we have seen eyebrow trends transform from thin, sparse, “barely there” lines, to full and perfectly sculpted parts of our faces. Today, we are embracing the big, bushy, and even an overgrown look. One service that has emerged from this trend is the brow lamination, which we offer here at Flawless!

Brow lamination, sometimes referred to as an “eyebrow perm,” originated in Russia and has been traveling west with its popularity. Most notably, brow lamination took off in the United Kingdom, making its fame with British runway models and beauty moguls.

Despite its popularity across Europe, this technique only landed in the United States about two years ago! However, once it landed, it hit the ground running and took off. American celebrities like Cardi B and Kim Kardashian can be seen rocking brow laminations today.

What does a brow lamination do?

Brow lamination gives thinner, sparse-looking brows a full and bold appearance in just one hour! It offers a more permanent solution for brow gels. It is also a great alternative if you do not want the expense or commitment of microblading your eyebrows.

How does it work?

Brow lamination is a three-step solution process, similar to its sister service, “eyelash lifting” (or as we commonly refer to them, lash lifts). Like eyelash lifting, brow lamination alters the shape of the hair through a chemical process.

In the first step, the solution breaks down the existing structure of the hair so it can stretch out and become flexible to take on a new shape. After the initial solution is removed, a new solution is applied to hold the hair in its new shape. Each process can take up to six minutes at most, depending on the individual's hair structure.

After the second solution is removed, we apply a moisturizing product with ingredients that add shine and hydration back into the hair. This gives the brow lamination added boldness and glow.

How long does a brow lamination last?

Brow laminations can last between six and eight weeks, depending on the client’s hair structure. Like many of our services, regular and mindful aftercare plays a big role in how long the lamination will last!

How do I take care of my brow lamination?

The most important part is to avoid getting your brows wet for 24 hours after your service. Doing so allows the hairs to set in place. If the hairs get wet during this initial timeframe, you run the risk of reversing the lamination and causing the hairs to fall out of place.

Keep your brow hairs moisturized daily to maintain the integrity of the styled hair. This will also help prevent your brow hairs from becoming dried out and brittle. Since lamination is a perming service, the hairs are more susceptible to drying out if the proper aftercare steps are not taken. Your brow artist will recommend products to ensure that you’re well-equipped to maintain your new brow look!

Who is a candidate for brow lamination?

The ideal brow lamination client already has a defined shape to their eyebrows. The eyebrow must contain an almost full eyebrow for it to be laminated. Those with more brow hairs are always better candidates — the more brow hairs, the more there is to laminate!

Brow lamination gives a bigger, bolder look. If you aren’t used to big and bold brows, your brow artist might suggest starting off with a gel or a brow soap first.

How do I prepare for a brow lamination?

Your eyebrows should also be as long and bushy as possible. If you’re planning a lamination, notify your brow artist so they can start preparing you for this process.

If you maintain your own eyebrows, we suggest that you avoid waxing, tweezing, and trimming your brow hairs. The more hair we have to lift and shape, the better the outcome of your brow lamination!

When coming in for your appointment, we suggest that you don’t wear any makeup. Additional products on your face could interfere with the laminating process.

If you’re still unsure if you’re a good candidate for this service, we are happy to provide a consultation prior to booking! One of our brow artists will assess your current brow condition, provide suggestions to prepare you for the service, and answer any questions you might have to ensure brow lamination is a good fit for you.

What comes with a brow lamination service?

At Flawless, our signature brow lamination comes with a brow wax and tint. We feel that the lamination pairs best with a tint to give your brows the boldest look possible. Waxing gives the perfect shape to your brows; especially if you’ve been growing out your eyebrows in preparation for this service, the brow wax will clean them up so you can show off your new, beautiful look.

If you don’t love your newly laminated brows at first, that’s normal! We always suggest “trusting the process” and find that clients love their new look after the brow hairs settle in a few days.
